United We Stand was nominated British fanzine of the year and the awards do was held in that London on Sat 8th July. Joe Ganley (writer), Steve Armstrong (writer) and Ant Shaw (work experience cleaner pictured in the middle below) went down from Manchester to represent UWS - we were on a shortlist of six mags from different clubs:
A Love Supreme (Sunderland)
The Gooner (Arsenal)
The Seagull Love Review (Brighton and Hove Albion)
The Square Ball (Leeds United)
True Faith (Newcastle United)
United We Stand (Manchester United)
We made the shortlist last year when the award was won by The Square Ball. We read all the other mags (we swap with lots of fanzines each month too) and know the quality.
This year? WE WON!
It's the first thing we've won since we started the mag almost 23 years ago.
We're going to smelt the trophy and use the money to buy the Glazers out.
I'm buzzing for everyone associated with the mag. So much effort goes into it every month, hundreds of hours of work. We've got about 20 regulars writers, 10 groundsellers, a great design, proofreading and distribution team. From Sam who picks up the mail to Rob who sends the subscriptions out, UWS runs on passion and enthusiasm. We need these people. Without them there would be no mag, no outlet for emerging writers to have their work properly edited, improved, subbed, designed and distributed.
We're a small independent mag and we charge £2 per copy outside the ground for 44 pages. We could charge more, we could take more adverts. But we don't. We can cover our costs if enough people buy.
So a big thanks to our loyal readers who buy the mag and support us during a time when too many people expect everything for free online. You help us keep the printed fanzine culture going and that's important not just for MUFC where we're lucky to have three very different fanzines, but all football clubs.
Get in!
Cheers,
Andy Mitten
